What Is Computer Adaptive Testing?

The NCLEX does not give every candidate the same questions. Instead, a computer algorithm selects each question based on your performance on the previous question. Answer correctly → next question is harder. Answer incorrectly → next question is slightly easier.

The exam continues until the computer reaches 95% statistical confidence that your ability is either above or below the passing standard — then it stops.

The Question Range

ExamMinimumMaximum
NCLEX-RN75 questions145 questions
NCLEX-PN85 questions150 questions

Why Your Exam Stops When It Does

Stopped at 75-85 questions: The computer reached 95% confidence early. This happens when performance is consistently above or below the passing line. It does NOT mean you failed.

Continued past 100 questions: Your ability is near the passing standard and the computer needs more data to determine placement. Stay calm — this is actually common and does not predict failure.

Reached maximum questions: The computer uses the last 60 questions to determine pass/fail.
