[Timeline: NCLEX Changes 2020–2026]
2021: The Announcement
NCSBN publicly announced the Next Generation NCLEX initiative, describing a complete overhaul of the exam's design philosophy — from knowledge-based to judgment-based assessment.
2022: Beta Testing
NGN item types were beta-tested as unscored experimental questions embedded in live NCLEX exams. Candidates encountered the new formats without knowing they were beta items.
April 2023: NGN Launch
The full NGN exam launched globally. All NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN exams now include the 6 new item types. Case studies were introduced as standalone clusters of 6 related questions built around a single patient scenario.
2024–2026: Market Adaptation
The testing industry has largely adapted. Major prep providers now offer NGN-specific content. Pass rates have stabilised as candidates prepare more deliberately for clinical judgment.
📌 What This Means for 2026 Test-Takers
In 2026, there is no excuse for being surprised by NGN question types. Every prep resource worth using is NGN-aligned. English Companion's entire question bank and course content is built for the current NGN format.
What's Coming After 2026?
NCSBN has signalled ongoing refinement of the clinical judgment measurement model. Future changes may include increased use of simulation-based items and AI-assisted scoring. For now, the 2026 exam format is stable — focus on mastering what is in front of you.
