What Is the NCLEX Exam?
The NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is the standardised licensing exam that every nursing graduate must pass to work legally as a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) in the United States, Canada, and other NCSBN-member countries.
Think of it as the final gate between nursing school and your nursing career. You can graduate at the top of your class, ace every clinical rotation, and still need to pass this exam before you can officially practise as a nurse.
🌎 Why Kenyan Nurses Take the NCLEX
The NCLEX opens doors to nursing careers in the US, Canada, and the Gulf. For Kenyan nurses, passing NCLEX is one of the highest-ROI career investments available — with US starting salaries often exceeding KSh 700,000 per month.
NCLEX-RN vs NCLEX-PN
NCLEX-RN is for registered nurse graduates (BSN or ADN). NCLEX-PN is for practical nurse graduates (LPN). Most Kenyan nurses with a diploma or degree take the NCLEX-RN.
| Feature | NCLEX-RN | NCLEX-PN |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum questions | 75 | 85 |
| Maximum questions | 145 | 150 |
| Time limit | 5 hours | 5 hours |
| Complexity | Higher clinical judgment | Foundational nursing |
How the NCLEX Works: Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT)
The NCLEX uses Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) — the exam adjusts its difficulty in real time based on your answers. Answer correctly, and the next question is harder. The exam ends when the computer is 95% confident in your ability level.
This is why candidates answer different numbers of questions. Stopping at 75 questions does not mean you failed. Learn how CAT actually works →
The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) — 2023 Onwards
In 2023, the NCSBN launched the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), which tests clinical judgment, not just fact recall. New item types include bow-tie questions, trend questions, and extended drag-and-drop.
If you are testing in 2025 or 2026, you are taking NGN. Older study materials may be insufficient. Read our complete NGN guide →

How to Prepare for the NCLEX
The NCLEX tests whether you can think like a nurse, not whether you memorised a textbook. That requires practising with clinical judgment questions — not passive reading.
