Step 1: Indexing

Indexing is the process of officially registering as a student with the Nursing Council of Kenya before you are eligible to sit any licensing exam. This is mandatory and happens early in your training programme — it is not something you do right before your exam.

💡 Why Indexing Matters

If your indexing was not completed correctly by your institution, you cannot be cleared to sit your exam, no matter how well you've prepared academically. Confirm with your training institution's exams office that your indexing was submitted and approved well in advance.

Step 2: Your Institution Submits Your Interest

Unlike NCLEX (where individual candidates apply directly), the NCK process starts with your training institution. Your college or university submits a list of eligible candidates to NCK ahead of each examination cycle. You cannot submit this initial step yourself.

Once your institution submits your interest, NCK sends a notification link to your registered email address — so make sure the email on file with your institution is one you check regularly.

Step 3: Complete Your Application on the OSP

The NCK Online Services Portal (OSP) is where you complete your actual exam application. Here is the process:

1

Check your email

Look for the "Complete Exam Application" link from NCK in the email address your institution has on file.

2

Log in and update your profile

Click the link, log in to the OSP, and update or confirm your personal and professional details.

3

Select your exam series

Confirm the correct examination series (e.g. February, May) and your cadre.

4

Upload your photo correctly

NCK has strict photo requirements: full colour, bright even lighting, no filters, no headwear (except religious headgear), no glasses, neutral expression or natural smile, both eyes open, taken by someone else (no selfies).

5

Pay your exam fee

Pay only through official NCK platforms or bank accounts. Keep your payment receipt/transaction reference — you may need to prove payment if there is any dispute.

6

Confirm your examination centre

NCK assigns centres based on logistics and may adjust your centre closer to the exam date. Centre changes requested by candidates must be submitted at least 3 weeks before the rehearsal date, and are not always guaranteed.

Key Deadlines

MilestoneTypical Timing Before Exam
Application opens~10–12 weeks before
Application deadline~6–8 weeks before
Withdrawal deadline~3–4 weeks before
Mock exams~1–2 weeks before

Main examExam day
⚠️ Mandatory Rehearsal: Attendance at the rehearsal is only valid if you are physically present and sit the mock exam at your designated centre. Missing this can jeopardise your eligibility to sit the main exam.

Withdrawal & Refund Rules

If you need to withdraw from a sitting, you must do so officially, in writing, through your institution, before the published withdrawal deadline (typically about a month before the exam). Refunds are only granted for timely, properly documented withdrawals — informal or late withdrawal requests are not eligible for a refund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I register for the NCK exam directly without my institution?
No. Your institution must first submit your interest to NCK before you receive the application link. There is no individual self-registration pathway that bypasses your institution.
What if I never received the application email?
Contact your institution's exams office immediately to confirm your indexing status and the email address on file. Check spam/junk folders as well.
Can I change my examination centre after applying?
Requests must be submitted at least 3 weeks before the rehearsal date, but NCK notes that a confirmed change is not always guaranteed and is subject to logistics.
